Asset Valuation Accounting for Managerial Decision-Making Introduction To start a new business and remain in business profitably, many critical decisions must be made when the foundation of a new business is formed. These decisions affect the company in the long run and often make or break an organization. Methods of inventory control and capitalization policies are among these critical decisions that will affect any business bottom line. Our team has investigated these policies and will present our recommendation for the method of inventory and capitalization policy for the XYZ Mattress Store in the remainder of this paper. Inventory Policy Selecting the valuation method for reporting and valuing is based on key issues relating to the relevance and reliability of the method of accounting for that item. According to finetuning.com (2005) "how you identify items in inventory and determine which have been sold will depend on the nature of the products, the volume of the products, how they are tracked, and inventory rotation." Key factors to consider under the inventory policy are: location of storage facilities, temperature, security, rotation of stock, cost, training, periodic inventories, and control. caycon.com (2005) wrote: "Valuing a startup is intrinsically different from valuing established companies. Because of the high level of risk and often little or no revenues, traditional quantitative valuation methods like (P/E) per-share earnings comparables or discounting free cash flows are of little use. Startup valuations are largely determined based on qualitative attributes." To select an inventory valuation method, the options are FIFO, LIFO and Weighted Average. The valuation method for (FIFO) First-in, first out: Answers.com (2005) defines this as a "common method for recording the value of inventory. It is appropriate where there are many different batches of similar products." This method describes the first item coming in will be the first item going out of the inventory. Retailinventories.com (2005) wrote "cost flow assumption assumes that the oldest inventory is sold first. The ending balance of inventory is valued at the most recent purchase price. FIFO produces a more relevant balance sheet since the ending balance in inventory reflects its current value." An example of this would be: Ending balance in inventory would be 30 units of the most recent purchases. 30 x 300=9,000 E/B = 9,000.

As globalization ââ¬Ëcan be seen as being a condition resulting from a long history of international exploration, invasion and colonization, fuelled by economic, military, religious and political interests, and enabled through enormous developments in transport and communications technologiesââ¬â¢ (Evans 1997:12). The industrialized environment has transformed drastically since the advent of globalization. Industrialized countries have undertaken extreme restructuring by modifying their means of communication and synchronization of work activities. Globalization has made it promise for companies to work on a real-time basis, whereby products and services are conveyed to the right place at the right time. Since then, globalization and information technology has propagated and has undergone significant improvements. Costs have sustained to decline as these new technologies have emerged. A business not supported by a network of computer systems (primary information technology) is more or less destined to fail, since it will be incapable to compete efficiently in todayââ¬â¢s complex and dynamic environment (Aiki S. 1991). Companies are not the only ones who have gained from advances in modern information technology. Consumers and interest groups have created strategic alliances and now capable to coordinate their activities as well as exchange ideas and thoughts through a number of database and network systems (Collins J. C. , and J. I. Porras. 1991). For instance, owners of personal computers can subscribe to a computer network and without difficulty retrieve information on the products and corporations on line. Such information can also without problems be transmitted to other users. This huge use of technology by both consumers and companies affects, but the way business is run today. These consumer strategic alliances know no geographical limitations; oftentimes, they are global in nature, particularly among the industrialized nations. As we move toward more and more advanced technologies, the labor force must be retrained. This training must not only expose workers to the technical matters adjoining the new process but also to the new focus of the organization. They have to be made responsive of the importance of advanced technology in improving work methods and in remaining competitive. Employee compulsion to the new process is imperative. Globalization by itself adds little or no value to an organization. There should be organizational as well as employee dedication to exploit the technology to the maximum (Scott, A. 1996). For instance, with ever-increasing use of computer-integrated manufacturing systems, and the stream of technical documentation that accompanies it, employees have to be skilled of recognizing the critical information at the right time. Once that information is recognized and properly interpreted, there must be an organizational dedication to use the information to make better decisions. Without this potential, the organization cannot take advantage from new technologies. Human resourcesââ¬â¢ management, therefore, will persist to be a critical factor in the survival of any organization (Schlossberg H. 1992). We sum up the influence of globalization on human resources as follows: â⬠¢ Information technology transforms the mode of communication and work processes. â⬠¢ Custom or standardized operations are replaced with skilled and multi-skilled workers. An extremely trained labor force is desired to manage information technology. â⬠¢ Worker motivation and satisfaction might improve since workers are no longer restricted to routine operations, enjoy management powers, and can contribute to developments in their work processes. (Waters, M. 1995) Globalization also has an impact on the organization itself, as follows: â⬠¢ Organizational reformation is required. This reformation makes the organization flat. Decision-making powers are decentralized. â⬠¢ Communications are better and the organization is capable to make timely responses to its environment. â⬠¢ Introduction of new products and services is improved and varieties of products can be efficiently introduced and marketed by the organization. â⬠¢ The organization is competent to improve its efficiency, quality, and competitiveness. (Scott, A. 1997) Todayââ¬â¢s advanced technology can, conversely, easily become a basic technology. A rapid increase of new technologies also brings rapid obsolescence of earlier technologies. Policies concerning technology must not be static; they must keep evolving. Stalk (1988) points out that ââ¬Å"competitive advantage is a persistently moving target . . . The best competitors, the most thriving ones, know how to keep moving and always stay on the cutting edge. â⬠Competitiveness A company should be able to evaluate potential new technologies quickly. The goal must be to remain competitive, and effective management of technology is a vital step in achieving this. With an increased focus on customer satisfaction, technology is a decisive means for achieving customer satisfaction. Browning (1990) notes that a learning organization ââ¬Å"uses technology incessantly to refresh its knowledge of its customersââ¬â¢ wants and to work out new ways of satisfying them. â⬠This commitment to be a learning organization needs vast resources, however. For example, Browning also points out that building a learning organization ââ¬Å"necessitates new skills, clever people and capable machines. â⬠Noticeably, technology and human resources should be used together for the organization to stay competitive (Cunningham, S. and Jacka, E. 1996). Barabba and Zaltman (1991) note that ââ¬Å"hearing the accent of the market and making constructive use of it with respect to the voice of the firm is a learning progression. â⬠Essentially, the voice of the market has to be interpreted into facts and tasks that will lead to suitable products or services to satisfy customer needs. This is related to the application of quality function deployment, whereby the organization expands its strategic plans to assure customer needs. Thus, a learning organization should also be a caring organization. As a caring organization, its major objective is to please its stock or stakeholders, its customers, and employees, and also to be collectively responsible. The traditional organization, with the focus on satisfying stockholders alone, is varying to this new form, with a sophisticated stakeholder group (Petrella, R. 1999). Thus, globalization and human resourcesââ¬â¢ management are recognized as key variables that facilitate an organization to improve its productivity, quality, and competitiveness. A critical constituent is the information technology, which offers both opportunities and challenges. The organization should show understanding to its environment via its policies, and be learning and caring organization, as time and reliability influence competitiveness. Finally, organizations should innovate and constantly move to achieve new targets, particularly in view of todayââ¬â¢s rapidly developing new technologies (Shields, R. 1997).

Arthur Miller presents Eddie Carbone as a tragic hero Essay
The next major event in this scene is where Rodolfo and Catherine have been dancing to ââ¬Å"Paper dollâ⬠The words ââ¬Å"Paper dollâ⬠could represent Catherine, as Eddie is implying that Rodolfo only wants Catherine for his papers; his passport to the country. During this scene Eddieââ¬â¢s anger has been rising and he then makes an attempt to dishonour Rodolfo by making him look foolish and unmanly, ââ¬Å"I mean like me . . . would be like in a dress store. â⬠During this point Catherine and Rodolfo have stopped dancing and turned off the phonograph, showing that Rodolfo has taken notice of this remark and his pent up anger is shown when he unconsciously tears the newspaper in half. Eddieââ¬â¢s jealousy and anger has been rising throughout this scene and in another attempt to make Rodolfo look unmanly and foolish Eddie asks him for a sparring match. Eddie hurts Rodolfo by punching him, ââ¬Å"He feints with his left . . . staggers Rodolfo. Marco risesâ⬠He does this to illustrate his power over him and show to Catherine that he is weak and also to warn him this kind of behaviour is shown in animals where males fight each other for the right to mate. Marco has realised what is going on so he ââ¬Å"risesâ⬠to have his presence felt by Eddie and to show him that he will back Rodolfo up. During this scene Miller has been building up tension through Eddieââ¬â¢s controversial joke to the sparring match as what seems to be ââ¬Å"comradeshipâ⬠and jokes, is really a way to get back at the two brothers. At the end of this scene Marco and Eddie have a challenge to see who can lift a chair from one leg to above their heads. Eddie tries and tries but to no success the chair just, ââ¬Å"leans over to the floorâ⬠. When Marco attempts this he raises the chair as if like a ââ¬Å"weapon over Eddieââ¬â¢s headâ⬠this action is symbolic of Eddieââ¬â¢s fate as he dies because of Marco in the end. It is a gesture that foreshadows the future events yet to occur after this incident. This challenge of strength was also a more blatant warning to Eddie by Marco to show that he could out power and even defeat him in a fight, we know this because of the stage directions, â⬠. . glare of warning into a smile of triumphâ⬠These show Marcoââ¬â¢s facial expressions. He is smiling because he knows Eddie is no match for him, Eddie also knows this as his, ââ¬Å"grin vanishesâ⬠ending the scene and act with a dramatic climax. Eddie cannot defeat Rodolfo and Marco by being ââ¬Å"more of a manâ⬠so he is left with one option, betrayal, which brings on his downfall. The next time Eddie encounters Alfieri is his final meeting with him. Eddie comes to him desperate to do something about Rodolfo and Marco as he is immersed by his jealousy after seeing Catherine come out of the same bedroom as Rodolfo in the previous scene. In this scene Alfieri again describes Eddieââ¬â¢s eyes as ââ¬Å"tunnelsâ⬠this repeated use of the word ââ¬Å"tunnelsâ⬠suggests that his fate is inevitable as a tunnel has only one way out and so does Eddieââ¬â¢s fate. In fact in this paragraph there are numerous phrases and words that suggest the downfall of Eddie is inevitable such as, ââ¬Å"On December twenty-seventh I saw him next. I normally . . . sat around looking out my window at the bayâ⬠It seems unusual for Alfieri to break from his routine by staying in his office as he is a busy man and staying just ââ¬Å"looking outâ⬠the window is an illogical way to spend time, suggesting to me it was fate that made him stay in his office that day. Also the word ââ¬Å"transfixedâ⬠shows the downfall of Eddie, the meaning of the word transfixed is to be fixed to the spot through fear. Alfieri is scared as he knows what is going to happen next and he is powerless to stop it from happening repeating this idea of inevitability. Eddie uses the same excuses that Rodolfo is homosexual and that he is using Catherine as a way to stay in America. Alfieri tells him as he told him before, ââ¬Å"you cannot stop itâ⬠but Eddieââ¬â¢s desperation drives him on. Alfieri warns him, ââ¬Å"the law is only . . . drown you if you buck it nowâ⬠Alfieri is trying to warn him about the implications that would arise if he was to go against the marriage of Catherine and Rodolfo when he says ââ¬Å"lawâ⬠he is also talking about the marriage however his warnings are futile as he ââ¬Å"starts turning aroundâ⬠and goes to the phone booth. Eddie knows now that there is nothing more he can do than to call the immigration bureau, his hastiness and desperation impairing his morals, making him go against the things he stands for. In the last scenes we see that Eddie has lost everything, as all of the community turn their backs on Eddie, ââ¬Å"Lipari, the butcher, turns and starts up leftâ⬠. He has informed the immigration about Marco and Rodolfo which is considered to be the most dishonourable thing a Sicilian man could do and so they have lost all respect they had for him. Eddie still maintains his innocence as he never gave up fighting for his niece till he died and he stuck to his ways. Eddie is a tragic hero as he died because of his fatal flaw; his over possessive love of his niece Catherine. We see that he realises his mistake at the end as his last words are, ââ¬Å"My B.! â⬠this suggests that Eddie has now understood that his loyalties should have stayed with Beatrice his wife. It is Alfieri that recognises that the death of Eddie should persuade you to think that, ââ¬Å"it is better to settle for halfâ⬠. Alfieri also says that even though he knew that what Eddie did was bad there was still something in him that made him good, ââ¬Å"something perversely pure calls to me from his memoryâ⬠This conveys that Alfieri still thinks that Eddie is the ââ¬Å"good guyâ⬠at the end of the play, as what he did was out of love a passion for his family, even though inevitably this would lead to his downfall and this was the reason why he died the way he did. At the end of the play we agree with Alfieri as the audience considers Eddie to have been hero in his own way.

People belonging to different castes creeds and countries celebrate different festivals. These festivals have both religious and psychological importance. On these occasions, people perform certain rites and thank God for the blessing that He bestows upon them. They gathers together at some place and offer prayers according to the teachings and dogmas of their religion. The rich give alms to the poor. Relatives, friends and neighbours pay specials visits to one another. They enjoy and rejoice in the same way and in the same manner. Thus such festivals bring all the members of society on one platform and remove all social indisciminations.Such festivals have also a psychological significance. We need some moments of rest after the dayââ¬â¢s hectic activities. When routine work begins creating a sense of monotony and boredom in us, we desire to have some change in our life. This is necessary to purify us. So usually fairs are held on this occasion. People play different games. Picni c sports are thronged with people. Children celebrate the occasion with bangs and booms. Sometimes older people also join them. They dance and sing with the children. Dainty and delicious dishes are prepared at home. Sweets and cakes specially prepared for the occasion are sent to the near and dear ones.Houses are also decorated. So such festivals serve as an ââ¬Ëoverhaulââ¬â¢ of our mind, body and soul and bring about positive and constructive changes in our personality. Eid-ul-fitr is also such an occasion that is celebrated every year with full religious fervor. The Eid comes every year with the message of hope, love, equality and universal brotherhood. As it comes after the month of fasting, it has especial significance. It symbolizes manââ¬â¢s moral triumph over his animal instincts. The day begins with early rising, a bath, and wearing a new or at least the cleanest possible clothes and spraying perfume on oneself.It follows a donation of ââ¬Ëfitranaââ¬â¢ to the deserving. Then every Muslim proceeds for prayers. There is considerable hustle and bustle in the prayer ground. To the gay colours of the childrenââ¬â¢s dresses are now added balloons and toys. ââ¬Å"Khutbaâ⬠follows the prayer. In this address the speaker throws light on the importance of fasting and the blessings of God that it brings. Rest of the day is spent in meeting friends and relatives and exchanging gifts with them. A part from the religious purpose, the occasion of Eid provides economic activity. There is a great shopping spree for ten days.Both the rich and the poor make purchases for the members of their families and especially for their children who also receive ââ¬ËEidiââ¬â¢ form their elders on the Eid day. The shopkeepers reap a rich harvest of profits. With the approach of Ramazan and Eid prices shoot up. This trend must be checked. We must keep it in mind the spirit of such festivals. They are not meant for personal aggrandizement or personal gain s. The main purpose gains. The main purpose of these festivals is to bring hope and happiness in the life or those from whom fate has turned its face.
